Dominican Sister of Peace Peggy Duggan, a midwife, dies at age 77

Dominican Sister of Peace Peggy Duggan died April 27 at Sansbury Care Center on the grounds of the Dominican motherhouse in St. Catharine, Ky. She was 77 and had been a Dominican for 52 years.

Sister Duggan, a native of Holbrook, Mass., earned a nursing degree from St. Elizabeth Hospital in Brighton, Mass., a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Catherine Spalding College in Louisville, Ky., now Spalding University, and a master’s degree in midwifery from Frontier Nursing Service and Mary Breckenridge Hospital in Hyden, Ky.

Sister Duggan served as a nurse and midwife in Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, Massachussets and Texas.

In Kentucky, she served as director of nursing at Rosary Hospital in Campbellsville and as a nursing teacher at Spalding. She also served at hospitals in Hyden, Ky., and Buckhorn, Ky.

She is survived by two brothers, Wilfred of Marshfield, Mass., and John of Alamogordo, N.M.; sister Mary Duggan of Bridgewater, Mass., several nieces and nephews and her religious community.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today, May 7, at 10:30 a.m. in the Sansbury Care Center Chapel.
